Jackalope Ranch
Indio, California: Everyone is talking
about a new restaurant opening down the street - the Jackalope Ranch. A very
interesting story behind the enterprise, but the restaurant finally opened
four days ago with great fan-fair and expectations to the local economy.
Friends invited us tonight to give the new restaurant a try.
The
building is extraordinary, with interesting artsy details around every
corner, lushly landscaped grounds with pools, fountains - and blooming roses
in January. Jackalope Ranch has a huge smoker where slab after slab of ribs
are roasted to perfection. Interesting salads, appetizers, a decent wine
list and a great collection of steaks, ribs and smoked chicken dishes are
offered. Margaritas are sweetened with agave nectar. A must try!

Considering
we tried Jackalope Ranch on their fourth night of operation, things went
fairly well. There was some trouble with the air conditioning, but the wait
staff was right on our request for a warmer temperature. Our server was
great, actually quite attentive, and answered all our questions about the
new business. We tried a ceviche, a duck empanada, a Caesar salad and a
wedge salad before diving into more serious (meatier) entrees. The
smoky-flavored entrees were outstanding and my steak was very tender and
flavorful. No one was disappointed and we all brought home doggie bags.
After dinner we had a stroll around the grounds and checked-out the huge
outdoor (heated) bar. Really a "destination" restaurant, I feel Jackalope
Ranch will be popular with tourists and locals alike.
Until my next update, I remain, your smoked correspondent.
