Hot Tamale!

Indio, California: If I tell you one more time that we are enjoying perfect weather, will you get mad? Sorry, but it is simply glorious in Indio today. Not a cloud in the sky and the air is so clear (because it isn't windy). Well, never mind yourself with our weather... let's talk about the Indio International Tamale Festival - the largest tamale festival in the United States. And while I am on the subject of food festivals in Indio... these people really like good food - Indio is also the home of the annual National Date Festival.

Sixty tamale stalls lined the downtown streets of Indio this weekend. We strolled through the entire festival, sampling from only three booths. Tamales are very filling.

Craving something a little different? There was something
for everyone at the festival today - plus many booths
selling crafts, junk, tee shirts, junk, purses and junk.

There were carnival rides and many fun things for the kiddies.
For the adults - a beer garden with live Mexican music.

A perfectly-rolled tamale - this one was stuffed with cheese and jalapeno...
wait a minute... isn't that what had rolled in pizza dough last night?

We do now

It was a great afternoon of food and fun. We talked with a lot of people about tamales and the local food culture in Indio. We bought eight frozen tamales for our freezer, and picked up a dozen just-made tortillas and came back to the RV to watch college football.

Late in the afternoon, we were "treated" to a Christmas Golf Car Parade organized by the RV resort. Probably 40 golf cars went by - everyone of them decorated for the holidays and nearly every car had a theme.

Until my next update (from Borrego Springs!), I remain, your hot tamale correspondent.
