Desert Dunes Golf

Indio, California: Again, perfect weather. Low 80's. No clouds. No wind. Everyone is saying this is the best January in the desert in years. I just remember the past few winters here the orange trees froze, and it wasn't ten days ago that I had the floor heaters going 24/7.

What a great day to go golfing! Today we tried Desert Dunes Golf Club in Desert Hot Springs. (We golfed here in April 2007 too.) Desert Dunes had a special - ONLY $60 per person. (Still sounds expensive to me, but it is January in Palm Springs - so apparently money isn't a concern when tourists golf.)

Luckily for other golfers, we were not paired with anyone and golfed alone all day. Just as well. Play was, again, slow, so DT was able to play two balls most of the time. I could barely keep-up with one ball. I am learning to hit my new five-wood-fairway-rescue-club-thing! Today I had TWO pars!

A charity had set up a booth on the first par-three hole. Pay $10 and take your chance at prizes, instantly receive a $10 gift card to a local gift shop and get a free beer at the bar in the club house. Well, a girl just can't lose with a deal like that - plus it was to support a high school marching band! I paid, teed-up a five iron and (with about ten people watching) hit my ball within eight feet of the hole! I won a sleeve of balls. (I chose NIKE balls of course.) My caddy also hit onto the green (though not as close as moi) and received a sleeve of balls. If I had hit just a bit closer, I would have won a new driver! Dang! Well, that was fun. Continuing on in the course, we had more fun watching the wildlife than our shots. Not complaining - this was one of my best rounds ever - still shooting over 100 - as we were out all day, exercising, and together. It just doesn't get better than that.

Just when you think little critters are adorable... even though I can't honestly call a begging roadrunner "wild life"... a &$#@* squirrel sneaks into your cart while you are teeing off and steals your little baggie of snacks. (I am well known for my love of animals. I am also well-known for my dislike for two of G-d's creatures: squirrels and Starlings.) I hope the little rodent chokes on my organic, whole-grain snack.

After our round, and a nice long soak in the RV resort hot tub, we met friends at Las Casuela's Mexican restaurant for dinner. The food and the company were outstanding. Their guacamole is out of this world - with HUGE chunks of fresh avocado in the mixture. Las Casuela's (the La Quinta branch) had a live band in the bar tonight and we could occasionally hear wafts of music float into the main dining room... I even heard a few Jimmy Buffett tunes.

More excitement is planned for tomorrow! Shockingly enough, food is involved - be sure to check back.

Until my next update, I remain your animal-loving correspondent.
