Cruising Coachella
Indio, California: I will skip my usual
weather report, as I feel a daily reminder we are in the warm desert is
starting to make a few of my readers a bit hostile.
After working in the morning and exercising (just DT, not me today) we
headed south in the Coachella Valley in search of a decent taco. I know, I
know... some people are looking for inner peace... we look for the perfect
taco. One of our favorite places is in Indio. Situated in a little strip
mall, next to an Albertson's supermarket (with, no kidding, a Taco Bell in
the parking lot), Taqueria Guerrero (three locations in the area) turns out
delicious hard and soft shelled tacos and burritos. Walk-up counter; a taco
is $1.71.

As long as we were heading south, DT decided we needed to
drive to Thermal, home of the
Oasis Date Gardens.
Again, this is because we are always in search of the best. Just around the
corner from our RV park sits
Shields Date Gardens.
Shields sell fine dates. We just happen to think the Oasis dates are better,
their walnut-stuffed medjools are better, and their date shakes are
second-to-none. If you are going to have a date shake - have a good
date shake.

Date Shake. I was smart and only had a few bites of DT's treat.
DT was miserable because he was not smart and finished the
super-rich milkshake.
We took an adventurous route back to Indio - searching for
Coachella Valley High School. We read in the newspaper that the school
mascot was "the Arabs". We assumed they were referring to the horse breed...
since the school isn't far from the famous Polo Grounds and the huge Desert
Horse Park stables. We were wrong. They are "Home of the Arabs", as in the
people. Read about this mascot on the high school
alumni
association website.

A bit of irony on the sign today too, don't you think?
Speaking of polo... well, I was speaking of polo a while
ago... we continued towards Indio via the
Empire Polo Club.
A few riders were out practicing, but one guy was exercising horses. They
were beautiful animals and it was a great photo opportunity. Sorry I am not
a better photographer. (Though, dang, doesn't that milk shake above look
good enough to eat?)

We have a special adventure planned for tomorrow, so y'all
come back now, y'hear? Until my next update, I remain, your Coachella Valley
correspondent.
