Shadow Mountain Golf
Indio, California: A few days ago DT found
a coupon in the local newspaper for $45 golf at
Shadow Mountain.
(Cheap for the Palm Springs are in January, anyway.) Shadow Mountain, until
a few weeks ago was a private golf club and was doing well without
outsiders. Lately, due to the "economic down-turn", times are hard and the
club has recently decided to allow the public to enter the private confines
to play for cash.
My take on the situation is that this golf club is pretty much outdated.
Designed in 1958 by Gene Sarazen, Shadow Mountain is a short Par 70, 5388
yard course - and so tight, everyone on either side of us (and all around
us) was hitting on the wrong fairway. It was confusing! I cannot recommend
this golf course.

However, the course is still challenging. A decent golfer
can rip up to the greens - then three-putt themselves out of contention.
Play was delayed on EVERY hole and it took over five hours to play the short
course. With a cart! Annoying! I did not have a good day on this course.
Luckily, we had reservations at the impossible-to-book
Chapelli's
in La Quinta to make up for our bad golfing experience. Chapelli's is a
14-table restaurant - thus the prize.
Dinner was very good, very traditional and interesting. The menu is
basically classic Italian with all our favorites. (Regulars know the chef
prepares a few portions of eggplant parmesan each evening.) The only
down-side was that service was very slow and the wine list only holds a few
Italian selections. (Okay, okay, so we ARE in California and I shouldn't be
so picky.) The food is delicious. Bring your wallet.
