Red Rock Canyon
Las Vegas, Nevada:
We have been on the road for a few days now. We left Eugene after the Oregon v
UCLA game and headed south. After visiting family in the San Joaquin Valley, we
now find ourselves in Las Vegas. Amazingly enough, Jimmy Buffett is also here!
Also, we are traveling with two other couples - in even more RV's, so that
should keep things interesting.
I know Las Vegas is all glitz and glamour, but we certainly are not... so this
morning we went hiking in
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. This canyon is just a few miles
outside of Las Vegas, but for some reason we have never stopped in to visit the
park or hike the trails. Red Rock Canyon has a nice visitor center and a 13-mile
drive with plenty of scenic stops and hiking trails leaving from convenient
parking areas. Here are a bunch of photos of our hike - and not a lot of
chatter.

The hike was beautiful and less than two miles downhill over a
good trail... which unfortunately meant it was two miles uphill back to the
Honda. Dang. We did a little huffing and puffing as the trail is at 4000 feet
elevation. We saw no wildlife (except one lizard) in the park today.

We begin our hike to Lost Creek & White Rock Springs

RV NOTES: I would not recommend driving your
motorhome or dragging your trailer through this park. While the one-way road is
super wide and could accommodate a large rig - there is simply no room for
parking at any of the turn-outs. Bring your tow vehicle or towed vehicle. There
are flush toilets at the visitor center parking lot and inside the visitor
center. Pit toilets throughout the park. Water (vending) is available in the
visitor center.
What do hungry hikers need after a trek through the desert?
Tacos! We stopped at a just-opened addition to the popular local Roberto's Taco
Shop on the Blue Diamond Highway and had delicious chicken tacos, $2.05 each.
Perfect!
