The Springs at Borrego RV Resort

Borrego Springs, California: Hello from the desert! We had a great long weekend with our daughter in Los Angeles and have returned her dog. Pet free now.

We have enjoyed a wonderful day. We actually had to use our air conditioner in the RV while we were driving today - and yes, it still worked! It was 85 degrees in Los Angeles today. Before we left our campsite, we gave the RV a top-to-bottom cleaning. (Probably a waste of time, as we are heading into the dusty desert.) Luckily, even the most serious cleaning of a 40-foot-long house takes less than one hour. DT ran, we hitched-up and were on the road.

Our drive today started on major freeways - sometimes eight lanes wide - and ended up going up over a two-lane 4000+ foot pass before plunging down into Borrego Springs - a sleepy little village that seems on the verge of becoming another desert hot spot. The setting here is simply fabulous - steep mountains to the near west, a large valley with natural hot springs and more mountains in the eastern distance. Cactus, sand and dust lay between the mountains, and the usual incredible array of desert wildlife and vegetation thrive in the valley - ancient home to mastodons and other gigantic creatures.

The view from our campsite - over the golf course

We are camped at a luxury high-priced campground with a regulation 9-hole golf course, fitness center, pool, natural mineral spas, high speed wifi and all sorts of other stuff we campers treasure. After settling in, we went out to explore. We drove around Borrego Springs and then went to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park on the outskirts of town. The Visitor Center at the park is incredible. Built into the earth, it nearly disappears into the hillside, yet is filled with valuable information about the fascinating park and offers great user-friendly displays for the kids. The volunteers are also friendly and helpful too. The park is home to around 270 of the known 400 Peninsular Bighorn Sheep left on Our Planet.

We talked to hikers who had just finished the canyon hike and hopefully we will take this hike over the next few days and see a few sheep ourselves. The weather this week is supposed to be perfect - high 70's during the day and mid-50's at night.

We had a home-cooked meal tonight - in front of the television which was tuned to the alleged college football championship game. Oh, goodness, it wasn't even fun, was it? No matter, our meal was delicious and we enjoyed a quiet evening.
