Rogue River Gorge Viewpoint
Bend, Oregon:
We spent all of last week camped at Cal-Expo attending the NCAA Track &
Field Championships and visiting with family. Guess we should be heading
home?
Today, we drove from Shady Cove, Oregon to Bend along Highway 62. Neither of
us had ever driven this Oregon road and it was simply a beautiful, scenic
drive.
We stopped at the Rogue River Gorge Viewpoint (1/2-mile
north of the town of Union Creek on Highway 62) to see a 500-foot section of
the Rogue that plunges through a 25-foot wide gorge through a lava flow.
Very different and so very beautiful.

The Rogue River floats over a lava flow...

through a deep gorge...

... then out of the canyon.
All of this water goes through lava flows, through lava
tubes and collapsed lava tubes. Enough water goes through the canyon each
minute to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool and the average temperature is
44 degrees. The local fish do not grow very large due to the chilly
water conditions. It was a beautiful walk! This is a great place to stop
along Highway 62 in southern Oregon.
