Overnight in Logan, Utah

Logan, Utah - NOTE: We have spent the past week in Sacramento (of course at Cal Expo RV Park) attending the NCAA Track & Field Championships. Now we are on the road heading over to Wyoming to meet up with Terry's family for a few days in Yellowstone.

We had a boring day, with a few strange sights. We drove through a terrible rain storm - but the air was so dry, the rain evaporated before it hit the earth. We saw thousands and thousands of crickets along the sides of the interstate, with flashing signs warning of slippery roads due to crickets! Weird. We drove well over 400 miles today and only the last hour had interesting scenery. We spent the morning driving through desert and the afternoon driving over salt flats. The highway is straight, and except for one pass, was flat. Occasionally we would pass a strange radio or satellite tower in the middle of nowhere - no doubt awaiting signals from a passing alien space ship. We came into Salt Lake City and took a hard left, and followed I-15 north along the base of the Wasatch Mountains to Brigham City. At Brigham City we left the interstate and entered the foothills of the northern-most part of the range, taking Highway 89 to Logan, Utah. This was a beautiful drive - we were bored with salt flats and sage brush. The cool green hills were a happy change. We drove past huge, beautiful homes with perfectly manicured lawns - a trampoline behind each home. Except for birds, we saw no wildlife all day.

We are staying at the Ramada Inn - they have a small RV park in the back and campers are allowed to use their indoor pool and spa. We are parked next to a guy who lives in the teeniest camper EVER with two big mutts. "They are loud, but they don't bite", their owner told DT, just as the Springer-Lab mix attacked him. Luckily DT is quick on his feet and the chain around the dogs neck was short or my driver would be short an arm about now. (INSERT COMMENT HERE: Excuse me, but aren't Springers and Labs among the most gentle of all breeds?!?!?) The other mutt is a Rottweiler-Shar Pei mix. Logan (the Corvallis of Utah) seems to be a nice enough college town. Utah State University, Home of the Aggies, is nestled up in the hills above town and on our tour of campus, we saw beautiful brick buildings set amongst huge expanses of lawn and monstrous trees. There was no "college" part of town though - no little shops, taverns, restaurants, etc. - near campus. USU is mainly an agricultural and science college, but is renowned for their summer opera performances.

Our self-guided tour of Logan ended up at a local restaurant for a local brew. They served two types of beer - 3.2% and 5.5%. DT had a Polygamy Porter - "It's nice to have more than one" and "Take one home to the wives." We ended up having a heavy snack/light dinner here. Our waitress was an Aggie and she explained even though there are no restaurants or shops near campus, the U runs a free shuttle bus service all over town - so the kids just come "down town" for their needs. After dinner, we went to The Wal-Mart for bottled water and other essentials. Guess what was on sale at The Wal-Mart? Trampolines. $159.

So, that was our day and our nice evening in pretty Logan.
