Beverly Beach Camptown Resort

Beverly Beach,... (gotcha!)... Florida:  One day - three states. Didn't drive far either. (An explanation for non-Oregonians, we have a Beverly Beach in Oregon, too.) I don't know if you checked my journal late last night, but we had a doozy of a thunderstorm and rivers of rain. Everything was just soggy and the campground was a mess with leaves and branches and puddles. I was out early to go to the nearby post office and saw crews working near the campground entrance. A tree had been struck by lightning and it had split in 3 or 4 pieces and the workers were already cleaning it up. It was quite a memorable experience last night! We had no damage, except everything seemed so damp. Our cabinet doors are now difficult to close - they have swollen so much in the humidity. It was so hot and humid this morning, even my runner couldn't cool-off after his run. He asked for the air conditioner - possibly a first - EVER!  Poor Doodle Dawg is walking around panting, with his tongue hanging out.

And so, we left South Carolina. We really enjoyed the Carolinas - beautiful, beautiful country, nice people, good food, interesting history and architecture. Terrible drivers, though. We entered Georgia (again). "Welcome to Georgia and thank you for having Georgia on your Mind". What? It was just so awful, especially if you looked back at the beautiful, palm-filled interstate island with a dignified sign reading "Welcome to South Carolina". I was looking for Ray Charles at the next rest stop.

After leaving the Low-Country of South Carolina and Georgia (read that SWAMP), we are looking forward to the even lower country of Florida. (The highest point in Florida is 345 feet and that is on the far west border.)

Finally, we had sun! We entered the state on I-95, but cut-over to the "Avenue That's Known as A-1-A" north of Jacksonville, and followed the coast south. We stopped at a beach and drove through the pretty town of St. Augustine - home of the Fountain of Youth, and finally stopped at a campground north of Daytona Beach. We are camped, parked head-in, on the beach! We pulled in and saw a group of dolphins swimming and jumping in the ocean in front of our campsite! Welcome to Florida!
