Lakehead Campground
Lakehead, California - We visited with Mom
this morning, but left town just after noon. We had a nice visit in Merced,
disturbing Mom for 3 days and eating way-over the recommended daily
allowance! Family gatherings in Merced are TOO MUCH FUN!
Then, sadly, our "Far Side of I-5 Tour" ended just after 2 pm today as we
left Highway 99 and merged onto I-5. We made it to Lake Shasta, and
hopefully will decide to take an alternative route back home tomorrow.
As it was getting late in the afternoon, we pulled-out the trusty campground
directory and decided to call the highest rated park in Lakehead. The
Lakehead Campground had a rating of "8", and we called on the cell phone,
expecting them to be full - it was, after all, the 4th of July weekend. They
had openings, so we came in. The park isn't so nice. We cannot get level in
the DIRT. They charged us $27.50 - a ridiculously high price for a
campground of this "quality". We are, however, happy to be here. We are
tired. The smell of the campfires (and toasting marshmallows) is quite
reassuring and relaxing.
After setting up camp, we took a drive to the lake and also to look at the
other "rated" campgrounds, to see how the Lakehead Campground earned an "8".
All the other campgrounds are even worse than the Lakehead Campground. This
sad fact was dulled by the delightful discovery of a dingy tavern, called
The Bass Hole.
The Bass Hole had a patio in the shade and the place was hopping. We had a
beer and learned that tonight there was a big contest at the Bass Hole to
earn the coveted title of "Mr. or Ms. Bass Hole". Tell a joke or do a dance
and the title could be yours. Music will be provided by "Jo Mama". A
handsome hunk, with the interesting name of "Storm" was bartending.
The winner of the contest would earn $50, 2nd place, $20; and third place
will earn a "Bass Hole" t-shirt. It was an interesting proposition, and
though I am sure we could have walked away with the title, we headed
back to Goldie to call it a night.
