Rancho Sedona RV Park
Part Three: Hotter Than Ghana
"I don't know. I don't know.
I don't know where I'm gonna go when the diesel engine blows."
- "poem" by DT, with continued apologizes to Mr. Buffett
Sedona, Arizona - We woke early in Las
Vegas. The sun was beating down on Goldie, making us toasty in a 38' oven.
We packed it up and headed out before 9 am. It was 103 degrees. We were not
allowed over Hoover Dam - new security precautions since September 11 - no
buses, RVs, commercial vehicles - so went south on 95, took a left to
Bullhead City, caught Interstate 40 and headed toward Flagstaff. It was
hotter than Ghana and Goldie was pitching fits. Her thermometer was
completely out of whack. She needed her hormones adjusted, because she was
having hot flashes big time. The "check engine" light came on at every
incline. All day we had inclines.
It was deja vu all over again.
Her symptoms were exactly the same as when she needed a new thermostat in
Bend two years ago. We stopped at the Cummins shop in Kingman, Arizona. They
were swamped and the place was a dump. We decided to limp along to
Flagstaff. The Cummins shop in Flagstaff was a more professional operation.
But, they were shutting down for the weekend for inventory, though they
agreed to over-night a new thermostat to their inventory and would install
it on Monday. Maybe. Maybe? Probably. Probably? Hopefully.
We had a bad day. DT was stressed to his limits. Sometimes we had to drive
40 mph in the break-down lane. He HATES that. Who had the idea to buy this
expensive P.O.S. motor home anyway? Etc. Etc. Etc.
That said, we love this P.O.S. motor home. (Most of the time.) Good news: it
is seriously downhill from Flagstaff to Sedona - 7000' to 4000'. Bad news:
it is uphill from Sedona to Flagstaff, where we must be first thing Monday
morning. DT will drive Goldie and I will follow in the BC2. More good news:
this P.O.S. is still under warranty.
But the repair is days away, so let's put all the ugly thoughts behind us
and move on...
Sedona is BEAUTIFUL! We drove into town and our jaws were dropping at every
corner! What a fantastic corner of the world. We are staying at a very nice
campground, Rancho Sedona RV Park, on Canyon Creek. It has all the bells and
whistles, and though it is not advertised as a "resort" - we have a phone
line at our site and that makes up for the lack of three hot tubs. We don't
need a hot tub. It is too hot. Sedona broke a record today with a
plus-one-hundred temperature.
Since we didn't arrive until after 5:00 pm, we have just crashed en suite
for the night. It is unbelievable how tired you can get riding all day,
isn't it? I made a huge salad and we had dinner outside on our little patio,
complete with picnic table. We had many fly-overs: 3 heron, 3 duck, scores
of swallows and tons of bats. There is a little hummingbird trying to make
friends with DT. Beers have been consumed. Buffett is on the CD player. It
is finally cooling down and will only be 90 here tomorrow.
