San Diego
San Diego, California: Since we did not
have very far to travel today, we took it slow this morning and didn’t leave
Newport Beach until around 11 a.m. We drove south down Highway 101 (Pacific
Coast Highway). It was raining! It was chilly! It was foggy! Did someone
forget to tell the weather girl I was here on vacation and wanted sun??? As
we neared Oceanside – the Marines and Navy were invading! A huge aircraft
carrier was off-shore, beach landing craft were hitting the shore and
Hercules helicopters were flying overhead. We stopped to watch the activity
for a while; it was interesting, but sorry to say there were too far away
for my digital camera to get a good shot. Anyway, we are now at
Campland by the Bay RV
Resort. It looks better on their website than it does in “real-life†but
we will not spend much time here, except for sleeping. We were worried about
the weather as we want to attend the Buick Challenge in La Jolla tomorrow.
It is cloudy and really windy and NOT WARM AT ALL.

The invading navy behind me near Oceanside, California
Friday – 11 February 2000: Today we went to
the Buick Challenge. “Went†is maybe the wrong word, as we spent over 2
hours sitting in traffic just to get into the parking lot, and then another
hour to get OUT of the parking lot… so we spent 3 hours at the tournament
and 3 hours in the parking lot. Ok, so it was a very poorly organized
tournament, but the field was wonderful and the weather cooperated (sunny)
all day. The parking lot overlooks the Pacific Ocean, on some of the
prettiest real estate in California. Here is a photo of our view today:

Tournament parking at Torrey Pines
When we entered the
Torrey Pines
Golf Club, Group 50 was teeing off in front of us. This group included
Tiger Woods, Freddie Couples and Billy Mayfair. Because of Tiger’s
popularity, it was difficult to catch sight of him through the crowds. Any
glimpse I did see looked pretty good to me. We stayed on the South Course
and watched Mark O’Meara, Steve Pate, Steve Jones, Chip Beck, Billy Andrade,
Steve Elkington and Brad Faxon. Torrey Pines Golf Club is very pretty – the
views to the ocean are spectacular. Not a lot of golf courses have military
fighter jets flying overhead all day!
