Day Four
A lazy day (for me),
and Lisa only had to work from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a Track & Field Writers
Association luncheon, sponsored by NIKE. She was handing out more T-shirts,
etc. Dave and Brother Steve golfed in Auburn at The Ridge. I cleaned up
around Goldie, had coffee with Captain Smith, baked two baguettes, did 4 loads
of laundry, had a visit with Gary Barger, needlepointed and made a pasta
salad for our picnic dinner at the track.
Lisa came over about 3:30 and we went to the mall to exchange a skirt for
Meghan and did a little shopping. We met DT back at the motorhome around
5:30 and headed over to the track.
Tonight we spent a little time at the
sponsor’s center. C.J. Hunter was signing posters in the NIKE booth. Marion
Jones was signing her book at the Tower booth. (It is an autobiography. We
wonder how a 20-something can write her life story???) Only a few exciting
events tonight – Women’s javelin, discus and Men’s long jump final and Men
and Women’s 5000 meter heats. It was very warm today, but tonight it was
actually a bit chilly in the stands – I am sure the 5000 meter runners
really appreciated the cool evening. Regina Jacobs qualified for the 5000
meter final. Bob Kennedy barely qualified. The Hauser twins were awesome.
Lisa left for Steve and Gina’s and we took the shuttle back – there were
plenty of buses lined-up tonight after the meet.
Lisa’s report: One of the Hauser twins is a few inches
taller than the other. That is the only way the NIKE communications staff
can tell them apart – so during the press conference they asked one of the
twins to wear a hat – so the press would be straight on their identity.
Pascal Dobert is a babe. Antonio Sabato Jr. arrived today. I think he is an
actor.
It was beer-night in Goldie tonight. Lots of Ducks around and lots of
stories to tell. A good time was had by all. There is no track and field for
two days – a break in the competition – and Lisa has Tuesday free.
18-19 July 2000: No track and
field competition for two days. We relaxed and drove over to Santa Rosa to
visit Grandma, golfed and shopped. Wednesday night, Gina made another
delicious dinner: grilled chicken, rice, grilled vegetables and a tofu
stir-fry (made by her assistant, Lisa). There was also a lovely assortment
Japanese appetizers – edemame, sushi and rice crackers. Gina is a fabulous
cook and hostess. We came home after dinner and watched the Tour de France
with Gary Barger, Jim Smith and Jim’s girlfriend, Roxane.
