Rolling Hills Golf

Corning, California: Another day with no schedule. No conference calls. No car problems. We only needed to continue our way north. No reservations.

Sacramento River trails

After seeing a fox and a rabbit yesterday on the American River trails in Sacramento, today turkey were strutting about.

We left Sacramento and continued north on a much-smoother I-5. We stopped for lunch and made a salad with the lettuce from Gina's organic garden - topped with left-over steak from dinner last night at The Firehouse.

Salad

Oh, hello! This head of greens is Rosa Butter Lettuce. So sweet and crunchy. We added cherry tomatoes, grated parmesan and drizzled vinaigrette.

We stopped for the night at an old stomping ground, Rolling Hills RV Park, behind a casino, checking-in at 2p. Back in the day, this campground was not attended, but RVers bought a ticket from a kiosk - like a parking meter kiosk - and after paying $25, could choose any empty site. Now, you must register and pay in advance (now $35), but you can still choose any empty site. We have been inside the casino once - years ago. Too smoky for us.

For some odd reason, the sales receipt printed to display in our front dash was registered to "Debbie Taylor" - no idea why. I paid cash. Maybe I just look like a Debbie? The attendant said she misunderstood my name and would reprint the window tag, but I said no. I will be Debbie tonight.

We set up camp and walked immediately over to the adjacent golf course, The Links at Rolling Hills, for a round. Campers get a "Stay and Play" discount card, receiving $5 off per round, making our green fees only $30 each. It's been a long while since we have paid so little to play golf, and this course is very pretty, very green, in fabulous shape, and very challenging. There were few golfers this afternoon and we paid and went immediately to the first tee. So few golfers, the starter had gone home.

So much wildlife and bird life on the course today. We saw rabbits, geese, lizards and countless birds - especially red-winged black birds and egrets. Last year, we saw muskrat in the creek.

Debbie is a terrible golfer. She shot 130.

After our round, I made a simple vegetarian pasta dish and a salad with the rest of Gina's red lettuce (as the planned cannellini beans did not completely cook in the crockpot... so they will stew away this evening and hopefully be ready for tomorrow?).

Until my next update, I remain, your "Debbie wasn't invited to the royal wedding either" correspondent.
