A Day in Borrego Springs

Indio, California: As we often do when entertaining visitors, we took Kris and Steve to Borrego Springs for the day. Though they have visited us many times, for some reason we had to yet taken them to see all the art in the desert surrounding Borrego Springs - just over one hour by car from Indio.

A short description: Dennis Avery (of Avery Label fame) owned much of the property around Borrego Springs. He hired metal sculptor, Richardo Breceda, to fill the meadows with art - in this case, life-sized sculptures of animals that once lived in the area - mastodons, camels, sloths. Avery passed away in 2012, but not before Breceda placed about 130 creatures on his property. There is a map available in town, and a driving route to find the sculptures installed around town.

There are many photos to share today!

This was the first statue I ever saw in Borrego - in 2010 - when I happened to job past this farm worker harvesting grapes. It was love at first sight.

An epic battle between a scorpion and a grasshopper is visible from the farm workers:

One of the most famous - and most popular - statues is of a serpent that snakes (pun!) itself in and out of the earth and even under a road. His tail on the other side is capped with a rattle (ala rattlesnake).

We took a break from the hot sun and dusty desert at La Casa del Zorro (House of the Fox) - a beautifully restored resort just outside of town.

After lunch, a little more exploring:

The details are just unbelievable. I never tire of exploring the art work around Borrego Springs!

I will leave you with a few cactus photos and call it a day:
