La Quinta Arts Festival

Indio, California: DT and I are just so artsy this week. Last night we invited a group of fellow campers to watch the Academy Award Nominated film, Nebraska. I popped corn, popped-in the DVD, and everyone except Captain Jim & Mary who slipped away at intermission really loved the quirky black-and-white film. We are both fans of actor (and life-long runner) Bruce Dern.

Speaking of running... here is a view from my jog:

Palm Trees and Snow-capped mountains

Palm trees and snow-capped mountains. Sigh.

MCCBLT

Nothing better than running (or cycling) in the warm sunshine... unless it becomes hot sunshine. We are needing to exercise earlier and earlier in the day to beat the mid-80-degree heat. Our reward today for brunch/lunch? Uncured and organic Applegate Turkey Bacon BLTs on sourdough bread from LA's Village Bakery & Cafe.

This afternoon, more art! We went to the 32nd Annual La Quinta Arts Festival at the park surrounding the City Hall and library complex in Old Town. We hadn't attended for a few years, so it was nice to go back, walk around the booths set-up in the park and see all the incredible art - jewelry, paintings, carvings, statues, fibers and everything else under the sun.

The artists do not appreciate tourists taking photos of their creations, so I had to snap "in general" photos, but here are a few booths I really enjoyed:

Michael Gard - wire sculptures of moving figures (dancers). I've never seen anything like the mesh-men and Mr. Gard had them in a dark room, illuminated and hanging from the ceiling. Wow.

GoldyFish by Jessica Joy - hand-made fabric handbags, evening bags and totes.

Fiber Expressions -  C. Elizabeth Smathers weaves intricate baskets from pine needles on top of wooden bowls. Most interesting is the thinly-sliced walnut shells woven into the design.

Hamilton/Roberts - I don't have nice enough jewelry to honor the quality and beauty of the wooden jewel boxes Michael Hamilton and Dee Roberts create. Stunning.

Kinne Design Studio - not sure how it all works, but stained/painted designs on cement. Perfect for outdoor installations... if a person was in the market for a piece of art to hang on a very blank brick wall in a pavilion in the Motorcoach Country Club.

Ducks

Go Ducks

So many ducks live in the park... I had Ducks at my feet all afternoon.

Typical.

All that gorgeous art, and what did we buy?

Ice Cream from Brandini Toffee

An ice cream, hand-dipped in chocolate, then rolled in local Brandini Toffee.

It was a work of art.

Until my next update, I remain, your refined correspondent.

SLOGGER REPORT: 4 miles, around the block. I've run everyday this week and am so looking forward to a day off Saturday.
