Lunch in Julian

Borrego Springs, California: After coffee + work + exercise, DT and I drove the Honda up to Julian for lunch and pie. We make this little venture nearly every time we visit Borrego Springs. The drive is interesting, fairly short, Julian is a cute little town, they have apple pie... and if we take an alternate route back to Borrego, we are greeted with incredible views over the valley.

Julian sits at 4,200 feet elevation in the mountains between Borrego Springs (600 feet) and San Diego. Most every weekend Julian is also packed with tourists looking for apple pie, and on a hot summer day in the desert - or at the beach - Julian becomes packed with day-trippers looking for cooler climes. Julian is a tourist town; we are tourists.

Julian Grille - Julian, California

First stop was the Julian Grille, a great place we had not tried for several years. The restaurant is situated in an old house and is quite charming.

Would you believe I ordered the exact same as my last visit 4 years ago? Open-faced Rueben:

I could not finish it this time though.

After a great lunch and a fun conversation with the chef, we walked all the way across the street to the Julian Pie Company, bought a few pies and hit the trail back to Borrego Springs.

The Julian Pie Company has fresh pies to go, or by the slice to enjoy in the shop. They also sell pies frozen (ready-to-bake).

We did take the alternate route back to Borrego Springs - S22 - a daredevil of a drive. We saw bicyclists flying down the steep slope and DT clocked one of them going 45mph. Gives me the heebie-jeebies just to think about riding a bike that fast.

After that big lunch, we will have a salad for dinner.

And maybe a slice of pie.

SLOGGER REPORT:  I ran two miles this morning - around and around the RV park. That was boring. I will be out on the roads again tomorrow.

Until my next update, I remain, your "sweet as pie" correspondent.

RV PARK: Springs at Borrego RV Resort and Golf Course - We have a paved pull-through site with full-service 50 amp. One of our very favorite RV parks on the west coast. Sites are large and each has a nice cement patio and picnic table. There are also different varieties of citrus trees all over, so you will never be lacking for a cocktail garnish in the winter. Free wifi. Fabulous warm pool and many hot tubs - all from their own hot springs! Fitness center, library, community rooms. Regulation 9-hole golf course. Recycling. Huge fenced dog park! We are paying $70 per night.
